Our Legacy
From a single Packard automobile in 1963 to Broadway-style spectacles today, the Downtowners have defined innovation in the Mummers Parade for over 65 years.
A Tradition of Innovation
Founded in 1959 by Bill Isaacs Sr.
The Downtowners Fancy Brigade was established by Bill Isaacs Sr., a South Philadelphia taproom owner and Navy veteran. Under his leadership as Captain for 21 years, the club won 7 first prizes and revolutionized the Fancy Brigade division.
"In 1963, Isaacs bought a Packard automobile for $52, built a float around it, and rolled it up Broad Street — revolutionizing the entire Fancy Brigade division."
This pivotal moment transformed the Mummers Parade from a costume procession into the theatrical spectacle seen today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where brigades perform Broadway-style shows with massive props, scenery, and original choreography.
